Carmelitos Housing Community &
Harbor Hills Housing Community
Workforce Development Programs

The Goodwill People Works program, along with the Housing Authority of the County of Los Angeles (HACLA), operates workforce development programs at the Carmelitos Housing Community in North Long Beach, California and at the Harbor Hills Housing Community in Lomita, California.  Carmelitos is a 714-unit low-income housing community and Harbor Hills is a 350-unit low-income housing community.  Employment placement services are provided for housing residents who receive or may be eligible to receive Temporary Aid for Needy Families (TANF) or other financial subsidies.

The People Works staff work closely with both HACLA and TANF representatives in identifying residents who are eligible for services.  Qualifying residents receive Goodwill Works Employment Preparedness training prior to receiving employment placement assistance.  Additional services provided include resume preparation, mock interviewing skills, internet job search and resume posting, faxing and Xerox services, and linkages to job fairs and other recruitment services.  The People Works staff are also able to link eligible residents to child care services, professional clothing attire, transportation services, and educational tuition assistance.

Through a generous grant from the Josephine S. Gumbiner Foundation, the People Works staff have developed and currently facilitate a Certified Nurses Assistant training (CNA) program for the Carmelitos community.  The CNA program is a collaborative effort with the City of Long Beach Regional Occupational Program and the California State University, Long Beach Department of Nursing.  Qualifying residents in this training program receive assistance in tuition fees, training manuals, educational stipends, uniforms, nursing equipment, transportation, and training manuals, as well as, employment placement services in to jobs in the local healthcare business community.

For more information regarding these workforce development programs please contact the People Works staff at Carmelitos (562) 728-4581 or at Harbor Hills (310) 534-5196.
