City of Long Beach Multi-Service Center

The People Works department operates a workforce development program at the City of Long Beach Multi-Service Center (MSC).  The MSC provides a variety of services for individuals who are homeless or at risk of homelessness.  Services include medical, dental, child care, substance abuse counseling, transitional and permanent housing assistance, and job placement services.

Goodwill provides the Goodwill Works Life Skills training classes, as well as, the Goodwill Works employment preparedness training classes.  Once an MSC client successfully completes the Goodwill Works classes, the client is referred to Goodwill’s Job Placement services and receives employment retention services and additional supportive services for up to one year after placement into a job.

In 2006, over 302 MSC clients received Goodwill Works training and 26 individuals were placed in jobs with an average hourly wage of $11.43.  Seventy-seven percent of these individuals successfully retained employment for up to three months and fifty percent successfully retained employment for up to six months.  Employers from the local community who have hired MSC clients include, but are not limited to, California Bowling Lanes, Denmark Security, Long Beach Memorial Hospital, Universal Protection Services, Wal-Mart, Cambrian Homecare, and UPS.

For additional information regarding job placement services provided at the MSC, call (562) 733-1147 and ask to speak to a Goodwill People Works staff member.
